Haley Lehr, Class of 2017
SMU-IN-ITALY, ARTS AND CULTURE
Accounting major, psychology minor
Haley spent five weeks in Italy over Summer 2015 learning about art, ancient culture, and amazing pasta. During the program, she took Arts & Architecture and Ancient Myth & Thought while on the program.
SMU-in-Italy started in Rome, and the program took trips to Pompeii, Siena, Florence, and Venice. During the majority of their 5 weeks in Italy, Haley’s program stayed in hotels in Orvieto.
Her favorite experience was in Rome, at the end of the program. Before she went back home to Houston, she was able to go on a private tour of the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. She also loved her tour of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Be prepared for how hot it is inside! In order to enter the basilica, you have to wear conservative clothing that covers your knees and shoulders. Overall, Haley said her summer in Italy was not only so overwhelming but really enlightened her on Italian culture. She couldn’t think of a better way to spend her first trip abroad.
Haley’s favorite weekend trip in Italy was to Florence. Her program went on an excursion to Florence, and she decided to go back with her friends on one of her free weekends. She took Tren Italia from Orvieto to Florence and spent her weekend in Florence shopping at the famous San Lorenzo leather market. Haley also recommends going to the Magnum ice cream store for a great Instagram, and then going to the top of the Duomo–Florence’s most famous cathedral.
